China remains main source of Indonesia's apparel imports

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) acknowledged that the value of apparel imports for HS codes 61 and 62 increased by 55.461 TP3T and 29.611 TP3T per month (month-to-month/mtm).In terms of country of origin of imports, HS 61 goods consisting of knitwear and accessories came from China, Bangladesh, Turkey and Italy.At the same time, HS 62 goods consisting of garments and accessories rather than knitwear originated more from China, Bangladesh, Viet Nam, Hong Kong, China and Morocco. In fact, imports of readymade garments increased, especially HS 61 knit garments and accessories and HS 62 non-knit garments and accessories. On a monthly basis, HS 61 increased by 55.461 TP3T and HS 62 by 29.611 TP3T.Although on a monthly basis, cumulative imports of readymade garments, particularly from China, have recorded a decline. For example, for imports of HS 62 goods, there was a decline of 1.711 TP3T between January and July 2024, and the group of garments with a fairly high decline was non-cotton garments or HS code 6212099.

Meanwhile, imports of HS 61 goods fell even more sharply, to 4.751 TP3 T. The largest item in the decrease was knitted clothing and accessories. It is important to note, however, that throughout January through July 2024, imports of HS 61 knitwear merchandise from China declined cumulatively by 4.751 TP3T, with the largest decrease in knitwear or accessories, in addition to a 1.711 TP3T decrease in HS 62. Similar to imports of apparel merchandise, the value of imports of footwear from China included in HS code 64 through July 2024 increased by 3.371 TP3T (m) and 21.541 TP3T y/y (year-over-year) to $50.99 million. Both apparel and footwear increased on a monthly basis. However, to view the performance of exports and imports of goods, it is good if they are viewed cumulatively over a certain period of time. The demand for stock may vary from month to month if it is affected relatively late in the month by the lead time process, but it would be good to look at how a country's imports and exports are performing better by looking at the numbers that have been accrued or the cumulative numbers.
