Indonesia's Ministry of Industry introduced mandatory standard certification for 16 products

The Minister of Industry has issued a new regulation on the implementation of mandatory Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for 16 industrial products with the aim of providing quality assurance to the public.The regulations included in the Minister of Industrial Regulation's (Permenperin) plan govern the conformity assessment process, which includes auditing and testing of products that have a significant impact on safety, security, health and the environment, and is an important tool to ensure that industrially produced products comply with established standards. To support the implementation of the 16 regulations, he has appointed a Head of Conformity Assessment Body (LPK), which consists of 20 product certification bodies (LSPro) and 28 testing laboratories, said that the LPK plays an important role in ensuring that products circulating in the market comply with the applicable requirements. In addition, the head of the Ministry of Industry's Bureau of Standardization and Policy for Industrial Services (BSKJI) said that the 16 new Ministry of Industry regulations aim to regulate pre-stressed steel wire products, calcium carbide, valves, stoves, LPG gas cooker hoses, ceramic tiles, sling sprayers, safety shoes, sodium tripolyphosphate, alumina sulphate, zinc oxide and cement.

To date, the Ministry of Industry has coordinated 44 Permenperin drafts, of which 16 Permenperin details have been released and 28 Permenperin drafts are in the process of being released. Meanwhile, 24 other designs are still in the process of discussion with relevant stakeholders. The Ministry of Industry noted that there are already 5,300 SNIs for various industrial sectors, of which 130 have mandatory SNI status. Earlier the Minister of Industry emphasized the importance of implementing the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) as a tool to control imports. Therefore, he requested to the Supervisor of Industrial Standards (PPSI), who is authorized to supervise the implementation of this provision by SNI Order No. 45 of 2022 through the Regulation of the Ministry of Industry No. 1.
