Chinese EV firms plan to build charging facilities in Indonesia

中国电动车企计划在印尼建设充电设施

BYD (BYD), an automobile company from China, has admitted that it has begun reviewing its long-term roadmap for business development in Indonesia. BYD Auto Indonesia's head of marketing and communications said that this development includes the provision of charging station facilities in public places so that it can eventually support the use of electric vehicles as daily transportation. Regarding public charging facilities for electric vehicles, BYD is reviewing its long-term development roadmap. Consider that this is also related to investments and involves certain procedures in other areas. Considering that BYD has only just started delivering vehicles to consumers within the last two months, when deciding on a long-term plan, the company will provide consumers with wall chargers so they can charge at home, so they don't have to bother looking for a public EV charging station (SPKLU) for their daily use of the car. As part of their short-term strategy, they are also offering free installation directly at the customer's home.

In addition to this, most of their showrooms are also equipped with 2-4 shot DC fast chargers in the parking lot, a facility that is free for any brand to use. The move comes after PT Hyundai Motor Indonesia (HMID) decided to limit the use of its public charging facilities (SPKLU) to the Hyundai brand only from August 2024, a move that is an effort by the company to protect Hyundai brand EV users from using the SPKLU facilities amidst the flurry of EV brands in Indonesia. Hyundai is the most aggressive car brand in building charging station facilities in Indonesia since 2022, and currently has nearly 300 SPKLU units under its belt. The government asked them to create special infrastructure for their brand and secondly Hyundai has sold more than 10,000 electric cars and now 11,000 so they are now prioritizing Hyundai consumers.
