PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially commence the construction of the Lumut Balai 3 Geothermal Power Plant Project in the Lumut Balai Geothermal Working Area, South Sumatra Province. The plant has a capacity of 55 MW and is expected to achieve full commercial operation by 2030. The Operations Director of PGEO stated that this groundbreaking event is a critical milestone to ensure readiness in all aspects of the project, including technology, approvals, financing, and risk management. He noted that Indonesia's development of new and renewable energy has entered a crucial stage, highly aligned with the policy direction of the 2025-2034 National Electricity Supply Plan. The Lumut Balai 3 Geothermal Power Plant Project is not only included in the National Strategic Development Direction but also listed in the 2025-2029 Strategic Project Bluebook issued by the Ministry of National Development Planning. Through advancing this project, the company will fulfill its commitment to continuously increase the national geothermal power installed capacity while meeting the growing electricity demand of South Sumatra Province. This project is a continuation of the 55 MW Lumut Balai 2 Geothermal Power Plant, which began operation in June 2025. The progress of this series of projects will help PGEO steadily move toward its short-term target—achieving 1 GW of self-operated installed capacity within the next 2-3 years, and further increasing it to 1.8 GW by 2033. Currently, the company has identified a total 3 GW geothermal development potential across its 10 self-operated geothermal working areas, laying a solid foundation for long-term growth. As of now, PGEO's installed capacity in operation totals 727 MW, distributed across 6 operational areas. In addition, as a subsidiary of the Pertamina Group, the company is also advancing several strategic projects, including the Hululeis 1 and 2 Geothermal Power Plants with a total capacity of 110 MW, as well as multiple cogeneration projects with a total capacity of 230 MW developed in cooperation with PT PLN (Persero).
