Indonesia Accelerates Data Center and Cloud Industry Development

Indonesia Accelerates Data Center and Cloud Industry Development

The President Director of DCI Indonesia pointed out that Indonesia's data center and cloud industry is in a phase of rapid growth, driven by the surge in internet users and the increasing demand for digital data storage and processing. Although Indonesia is highly competitive in the ASEAN market with a large number of internet users, there is still a significant gap in per capita data center capacity compared to countries like Japan and Singapore. To meet domestic digital needs, the data center capacity deficit is substantial. Currently, the Indonesian government has issued important regulations to lay the foundation for data sovereignty and promote the development of domestic data centers. However, legal certainty and technical clarity in the implementation of these regulations still need further improvement to attract more foreign investment. Accelerating data center construction in Indonesia faces several major challenges, including infrastructure issues such as reliable electricity supply and uneven fiber optic network coverage outside the Greater Jakarta area; cumbersome and slow approval processes; and a shortage of specialized digital talent, especially in operations and cybersecurity. In addition, evolving regulations require in-depth study to ensure they do not hinder innovation and provide certainty for businesses. To promote the sustainable development of the data center ecosystem, cross-sector collaboration is needed—sectors such as energy, education, logistics, construction, finance, as well as technology regulation and data protection, should all play their roles. Meanwhile, the government's introduction of private sector participation in national data center projects is considered a strategic move to drive the country's digital transformation and enhance data sovereignty.
