Indonesian state-owned mining company MIND ID recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Phase II Alumina Refinery Project in Mempawah, West Kalimantan. The project was simultaneously launched online with five other downstream industry projects, marking the formation of Indonesia's complete aluminum industry chain. The project is a collaborative effort between MIND ID's subsidiary PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium, PT Aneka Tambang, and PT Bukit Asam, with a total investment of IDR 104.55 trillion (approximately USD 6.23 billion). It is a core strategic project for Indonesia to advance mineral downstreaming.
The project has an annual production capacity of 1 million tons of alumina. Combined with the operational Phase I project, the total annual capacity will reach 2 million tons. It will consume 6 million tons of bauxite annually from PT Aneka Tambang, with electricity supplied by PT Bukit Asam. The project is not just a production facility; it is a national-level integrated industrial ecosystem that combines raw materials, energy, infrastructure, and human resources, helping Indonesia break free from dependence on raw material exports and achieve high value-added production.
The project is expected to generate IDR 71.8 trillion in GDP growth annually, create 65,000 direct and indirect jobs, and contribute IDR 6.6 trillion annually to national fiscal revenue. It will also reduce Indonesia's dependence on alumina imports and enhance its position in the global supply chain. Additionally, MIND ID plans to increase the aluminum production capacity of its subsidiary PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium from the current 275,000 tons/year to 900,000 tons/year, with a planned new smelter with a capacity of 600,000 tons/year to meet domestic aluminum demand.
