PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) has responded to allegations that a Chinese national attempted to smuggle nickel powder via the IWIP exclusive airport in North Maluku Province. On Friday, December 5, a Chinese national was found carrying 5 bags of mixed nickel powder and 4 bags of pure nickel powder while boarding a flight to Manado at the IWIP exclusive airport, and was arrested on the spot.
IWIP management stated in a recent written statement that the company is aware of the rumors regarding suspected unauthorized material transport at the exclusive airport, and has always complied with all operational and safety regulations, including those set by the relevant authorities. However, the company denied the circulating claims, stating that the information is inaccurate: the items in question are not nickel, nor are they illegal items or part of any unauthorized activity.
Management explained that the material is an alumina mineral sample for the aluminum industry from a tenant within IWIP, and it was an internal shipment that had obtained administrative permits to be sent to a laboratory in Jakarta for testing. Due to incomplete accompanying documents during inspection, the shipment was temporarily suspended. It is understood that Aviation Security (AvSec) discovered anomalies during X-ray inspection before boarding and confiscated the samples.
The company emphasized that there is no seizure by external law enforcement, no legal review, no detention of personnel, or investigation. The samples are currently held by AvSec pending completion of the documentation. IWIP reiterated that it will operate in accordance with aviation regulations, park safety standards, and guidelines from relevant authorities.
