Japanese brands still dominate Indonesia's car market

Automobile sales in Indonesia showed a positive trend in February 2025, with wholesale sales reaching 72,295 units, up 16.71 TP3T YoY and 2.21 TP3T YOY. retail sales increased by 9.11 TP3T to 69,872 units, up from 64,029 units in January, but were still down 0.81 TP3T YOY.Competition in the market is fierce, with BYD being squeezed out of the top 10 best-sellers list. Japanese brands Toyota, Daihatsu, Honda, Mitsubishi and Suzuki dominated the top five. Toyota topped the list with 24,397 units of wholesale sales in February, Daihatsu with 11,959 units, Honda, Mitsubishi and Suzuki with 8,757 units, 6,684 units and 4,750 units respectively. South Korea's Hyundai followed with 2,226 units. BYD ranked 12th, with combined sales of 2,311 units with its premium brand Tengiz, while the best-selling Chinese car brand in Indonesia is currently Wuling.
