Indonesia plans to develop nuclear energy in a big way

印尼计划大力发展核电能源

Indonesia will build nuclear power plants with a total capacity of up to 4.3 gigawatts (GW), which the president's special envoy for climate and energy affairs said was part of the government's energy transition strategy, with small modular reactor (SMR) floating power plants, as well as three 1 GW nuclear power centers. This comes after the National Energy Commission (NEC) revealed that Indonesia has 29 potential sites for nuclear power plants with a total capacity of up to 54 gigawatts (GW), with a number of potential sites from Sumatra to Papua already planned. However, there are three conditions that need to be met for the construction of nuclear power plants, including the establishment of the Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Agency (NEPIO), the involvement of stakeholders, and the definition of a national position. This series of initiatives is aimed at addressing the challenges of climate change and promoting economic development in central and eastern Indonesia.
