Indonesia's nuclear power plants are planned to be located in the western region
The Indonesian government is in the process of selecting sites in the west of the country to build nuclear power plants, and last year the parliament identified nuclear energy as a new energy option, which the Prabowo government will promote.Nuclear power plants of different capacities are proposed, with a large 1-2 GW plant in the west and small modular reactors (SMRs) planned to serve small industries. Previously abandoned due to the rise of renewable energy, the nuclear power program has been revived due to energy demand and geopolitical factors. Discussions stalled during the Susilo period are being reconsidered, and according to the national energy policy, the first nuclear power plant will be operational in 2032, with a capacity of 250 megawatts belonging to the category of SMRs, which will be constructed in about five years, while large-scale nuclear power plants will take 7-10 years, and the development of nuclear power in Indonesia is being steadily planned.
