Indonesia plans to export electric motorcycles to Southeast Asia and Africa

印尼计划出口电动摩托车到东南亚和非洲

The Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (Aismoli) is optimistic that battery-powered motorcycle exports have the potential to continue to grow, and that Indonesian electric motorcycle exports have already made their way into Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Cambodia. The association last week outlined plans for the national electric motorcycle industry to capitalize on export opportunities, with their overseas market expansion targeting other Southeast Asian countries, Thailand and Africa, and continuing to expand into African countries. They have already agreed on the presence of the industry, but now it has started to flow to Malaysia and Cambodia, and then there are other potential markets, namely Thailand, Vietnam and then Africa. In order to export electric motorcycles on a large scale, several Indonesian electric motorcycle manufacturers have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with several partners. A few of the companies involved in this agreement include United E-Motor with Malaysia and PT KK Brothers Energi, which plans to export to Cambodia. They only have one MoU yet to be realized because of wanting to meet the requirements set by their country's import destination. For the domestic market, sales are showing a positive trend with the help of the government subsidy program and the country has absorbed about 60,000 electric motorcycles. The domestic capacity is more than that and that is why they are targeting to still have the subsidy program next year and they are asking for more than 200,000 slots.

They may still be optimistic, but if best efforts are made, perhaps the situation could be more than that, depending only on the government's budgetary capacity. All the subsidized quotas for electric motorcycles for 2024 have been fully absorbed, and the remaining budgetary allocations have been exhausted, according to Sisapira data.Between January and September 2024, the subsidy for electric motorcycles will be disbursed for 30,607 electric motorcycles. The number of motorcycle subsidies received by the public this year is 60,857, bringing the total number of electric motorcycle subsidies distributed to the public since 2023 to 72,389. This comes after the Congressional Vice President said that the next administration, under the leadership of democratically-elected President Prabowo, must continue to give protection and certainty to the market development of the electric motorcycle industry. In response, he has discussed this issue with electric motorcycle industry players so that the new government can have a clear plan to open the global market for Indonesian-made electric motorcycle products. As a result, several countries have made several requests for our electric motorcycles, which clearly have great potential. Through meetings with industry participants, the committee will submit recommendations to the Prabowo government to prioritize the strengthening of the electric motorcycle industry. In this way other related industries, such as the automotive components industry, can also be revitalized and have a wider market share, not only for large industries but also for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
